The Institute for Human Continuity (IHC) – Hoax or Real Deal?

The Institute for Human Continuity (IHC) is displayed prominently on Sony’s official site for 2012 [the movie].

Given Hollywood’s ability to elaborately stage events and build anticipation for movie events, I can’t help but wonder – Is the promotion of IHC an elaborate hoax for the 2012 movie or is it the real deal?

Institute for Human Continuity (IHC) Mission Statement

The IHC site quotes its mission as…

To ensure the survival of the human race beyond 2012…After more than two decades of rigorous research from the world’s top astronomers, mathematicians, geologists, physicists, anthropologists, engineers, futurists…we know in 2012 a series of cataclysmic forces will wreak havoc on our planet. The IHC has developed a number of initiatives to prepare the world for this inevitability.

IHC History

The IHC history details its more than 30 year long history, from its creation in 1974 through to 2004 when its scientists declared a 94% certainty that cataclysmic events would decimate the planet and many of its inhabitants to 2008 when it came out publicly – following the lack of action by world governments.

IHC Initiatives

It’s scientific and research interests include:

  • E.A.R.T.H. – Education and Awareness Regarding Threats to Humanity, especially from solar radiation which will peak in 2012 at the same time the Earth’s magnetic shield will be at its weakest – possibly creating an apocalyptic landscape and decimating the Earth’s population.
  • Operation Safe Haven – colonization and escape technologies and other survival initiatives in the lead up to 2012 including as a subterranean city planned for Antarctica.
  • Yellow Stone, Super volcanoes, Earth’s dwindling magnetism and tsunami preparedness.
  • Solar activity, crustal displacement and Planet X.

Hollywood Hoax or Real Deal

The above videos draw parallels and reveal information about:

  • The IHC site (registered by Sony according to WhoIs.com)

Sony registrant for IHC

  • Comparative Religions, the Zeitgeist Movement, the New World Order, The Venus Project
  • Share International, the Lucis Trust Theosophy (like anti-religion) and its close connections to the United Nations
  • And, the opinion that the IHC is indeed an elaborate hoax by Sony.

The IHC runs a lottery for limited numbers of people around the world to be involved in a classified experiment that may ensure their survival in 2012 – the email you receive when you register does not say that it is a hoax however!

What Wikipedia Says

The studio also launched a viral marketing website published by the fictional ‘Institute for Human Continuity’, where visitors could register for a lottery number to be part of a small population that would be rescued from the global destruction that it predicted on what it claimed was scientific evidence. As far as its credibility was concerned, subsequent visitors to the website pointed out that the ostensible photo of the IHC’s premises on its ‘About us’ page was actually of the European Union headquarters in Brussels.  [Source: Wikipedia]

So, where to from here?

I am in the lottery for lucky Australians so I will let you know what I find out :-)

I also “signed” up for the lottery several months back and am rethinking it. Recently, The IHC has sent out notification that they are holding a Post-2012 Leader election. As I looked further into, “the contest” rules, it has become painfully obvious that the winner will win a trip to Cancun Mexico. Now, I’m not the smartest bunny, but I’d have to say that I believe this is an elaborate viral marketing promotion of a movie. I hardly think a crediable 30-year company would be hosting a contest to decide who the leader will be to run the post-2012 event.

My family and I have all signed up for the lottery and i would like to sign up to be the post-2012 world leader. I think IHC will find I am more than qualified for this position. I have fowarded a detailed resume to your world headquartes. If possiable I would like to take office by december 2011 to ensure a smooth transition to world leadership. I also included a list of items I would require as the new world leader. I look forward to receiveing you endorsement and appointment to this possition very soon.
Thank you

I believe that I should be appointed as the post 2012 world leader. The way I see it MEN have already screwed this world up as it is. It’s time for someone that has COMMON SENSE (me) to rule the world! I haven’t signed up for the lottery because I KNOW I am going to be the world leader. I’m a woman…why wouldn’t I?!?! So I know my place post 2012 is safe. I am proud that I can help my people move forward after this horrific event, but know that I have COMMON SENSE and will lead my people to a world of peace, happiness and prosperity. I will listen to my people and take every thing you say into consideration. I love you my followers and won’t let you down! Let’s throw these men out on their asses and get someone you won’t REGRET as your leader! ME….SANDI HALL

P.S. I can not WAIT to see the movie!!!!

Great enthusiasm, I love it. I’ll start up a competition for the New World Leader as another article. Something around responses to 10 questions or so. Unlike the competition, you won’t have to be a US citizen – anyone from anywhere can enter! Ultimate prize will not be world leadership – just a chance to propose why you are so perfect for the job and what you would do etc. More fun than serious – but who knows who reads these things. If you have great ideas – or silly but entertaining – you are welcome to put forward your views. Stay tuned, I’ll update this post when ready to go!

To all Bloggers out there: I know I am not the leader type, nor wish to be, however, I do know from being a prior leader in some large organizations in aerospace that a good and true leader does dwell on the fact on “Having Common Sense” or boasts about his leadership abilties from popularity contest. The leader of either a new world order, or Beyond 2012, should have many attributes that cater to the needs of the public and should stand firm and strong with just one of these traits to ensure his overall position. The idea and concept of creating a “game” to justify one’s ability to lead others is not a valid system of measure of one’s character, or spirit, that constitutes leadershhip. Perhaps, if the IHC is so adamant about finding this individual they should negate this “game” and concentrate on those who are current leaders to determine whether they would be a good fit as a start.

6 HQ August 28, 2009 at 9:59 am

TCS @ if the IHC were real – and clearly it is a promotinal gimmick by Sony – and considering the predictions about a lot of America being under water – perhaps a world leader should come from anywhere in the world and as you say – not be based on a popularity contest by the select few. Hold on – isn’t that how we choose our ‘leaders’ now? Maybe we should bring in the genetic, psychiatric and zena card testing? No system is perfect. Totally agree with you on the common sense factor.

Humanity, whether we like it or not, will come to an inevitable end. To actually try to be proactive in the events that may or may not follow, is completely childish. Trying to preserve the human race is naive. This will only create a ripple of effects. Panic will rise, fear and desperation will soon follow. Soon enough you’ll have people selling these tickets as if they were crack. Crime rates will shoot completely off the charts. How do you suppose that people handle knowing their lives are going to end? You really think it will be in a calm and orderly fashion? Government systems are completely corrupt-corporations lead our world as of now. That will not change with Capitalism in place. If people are to survive this predetermined end of time-it will only be the filthy rich. So if these calculations are to be proven completely true, and the end of the world will be coming upon us, let it. People are far too greedy to deserve a chance at a new beginning. And the people who are honest-humanitarians, will not receive any sort of chance at surviving. You can bet your asses that the rich who are running this world and our lives-will not choose you just because of a lottery ticket.

Impressive production, however the in depth research fails to mention the copyright notice or even to dig a tiny bit further and simply read the Terms of Service. Its pretty clear what it is, but thanks for the cool video!

10 NWL Tony August 28, 2009 at 6:03 pm

As the NWL of the post-2012 world my main goals will be to establish a world of fairness and justice. TCS is correct that the new leader should have common sense which is in very short supply in today’s world. Another set of good points were made by elle in her post. Justice should be blind and fair regardless of status or position, even the NWL should be equal under the law. Rights and laws should be blanket and applied equally. Hard work and dedication should be rewarded while being a drain and burden on society should be unacceptable. My first order of business as NWL will be to form a council to write a new constitution. The first article will be ‘the rights of the people are absolute and shared equally’. I look forward to leading you all into a brave new and equally fair world.

Yours truly,
NWL Tony

P.S.
Maybe sony could get behind this and maybe even give out 100 limited edition tee-shirts that have the IHC logo on the front and maybe something like ‘ I was in the top 100 NWL contest winners ‘ Sony and IHC leading you into a brave new future in 2012 and beyond. (just a suggestion)

11 HQ August 28, 2009 at 9:50 pm

Snarky @ that would take all the fun out of it :-)

12 HQ August 28, 2009 at 9:52 pm

NWL Tony @ great ideas, especially the tshirt – surely they couldn’t come up with anything cheesier than choosing Ambassadors from a comic and science fiction fans’ love-in.

13 Sandi Hall NWL August 30, 2009 at 6:12 am

Tony, You sound like you might make a good ASSISTANT to the NWL. I will have to consider it. Of course the laws will have to be blanket and cover everyone. Obviously the first laws should be written to make sure this doesn’t happen again. We should obviously learn from the Native American ways of living in harmony with our planet. We all know the coming events are natural but living in harmony will better prepare the world for these types of events. So as the NWL, I must make sure that all remaining survivors are cared for and protected. This will be done by building a competent, honest, and fair protection force that will answer to the people.

NWL Sandi

P.S. I love the idea on the t-shirts if that happens I want one!!!!

This is pathetic capitalization. Hollywood has finally taken viral marketing too far. Over 4,00,000 people have visited this website which seems like a legitimate government funded organization but in reality, is just a way for Ronald Emmerich to capitalize on peoples fear. Although this has been going on for years in Hollywood, this is taking it too far. People have already resorted to quiting their jobs and changing their lives out of fear of this conspiracy. All this webiste is doing is making people fear for their lives, just so that Ronald Emmerich can make money. This movie will purely support the wild and unsupported theories which correlate with 2012. This will stir even more people world wide to take dramatic actions in fear of their lives, resulting in chaos. This movie and website will simply result in a Y2K on a much larger level. All of this just so Ronald Emmerich can make millions of dollars.

15 HQ August 31, 2009 at 8:20 am

Tom, I agree with you about Sony’s site. Hollywood appears to have no conscience when it comes to marketing. I was flabbergasted when I realised the IHC was a hoax viral marketing strategy. It is always pretty obvious when the likes of Sony promotes an organisation – there is money in it for them, and lots of it.

Behind the scenes here at Beyond 2012 HQ we have been working on a publishing strategy to educate readers about the various views but also to focus on the “Beyond” – that is, how the world will be different beyond 2012 not just because of a catastrophic event but also by natural changes that are inevitable such as natural resource depletion, global warming, over population. There is also the positive side of life, where civilisation takes a step forward in its evolution, whether it be because of spirituality or community spirit.

This site is not intended to increase panic. I would not have published an article outing IHC if I wanted to promote its fear tactics. This will become clearer as we publish more articles in the very near future about Alternate Futures – not all of which are bad.

However, there is always a possibility of the Earth being destroyed – perhaps not in our lifetime – but who knows? If some people are preparing for drastic environmental change and others are not, then if something happens there will be losers. Preparation and planning should be a way of life for all of us to some degree. Like a long drive in the desert, take plenty of water…

16 Be Better Informed September 1, 2009 at 7:46 am

HQ and Tom
I hope it’s ok to post links to sites with information but if you’re interested in finding out some of the facts behind 2012, a couple of good places to start is the documentary video on You-Tube. Here’s the link to Part 1 of it…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNXEFjnbItE You can follow the links to view all 5 parts of it or search 2012 for a host of other videos. Another really good site to keep informed on what goes on in the world is coasttocoastam.com It is a talk show that covers a wide range of issues including 2012 from time to time. As far as people panicing and doing stupid things because they hear about 2012, these people should take the time to get informed before acting crazy.

Of course the guy that made the movie wants to make money off of it…that would be why he made the movie…. but just like HQ said people should be prepared not just for 2012 but for tomorrow, next week, next month and next year. 12-21-12 could be the end of the world, it could be the day for major earth changes or could simply be the day between 12-20-12 and 12-22-12. Y2K was pushed by companies and government that made money off of it. So why not push a movie if you’re going to make money off of it?

Two main points are that if people are going to panic because of it they should get informed, then they know whether to panic or not. Second, if you’re so worried about people panicking, then get involved. Educate friends, family and even strangers that there is no need to panic. Then if they tell their friends, it spreads and everybody knows. I think if we are going to worry about something, the swine flu would probably be a more important issue than 2012. Anyway, just my thoughts on the issue. This web site is for fun, so lighten up, enjoy the web site, enjoy life and living and see were the world takes us. And by the way, the coasttocoastam.com show is a really good show! :-)

17 NWL Tony September 20, 2009 at 6:59 pm

Well I guess everyone knows I am now the NWL so i will be writing laws for you all soon.

18 Human Resources November 4, 2009 at 12:23 am

I’m amazed that some of you actually believed this website was real…. much worse is the fact that someone spent 20 minutes debunking a website to which is clearly registered and owned by Sony pictures Inc… yet should be taken seriously in the other aspects of his “debunking of 2012″. Morons.
