The pole shift in 2012

We are always inclined towards finding out what would happen to our world in future.  After many films being taken by popular directors about world coming to an end our interest towards finding about the end of the world has deepened further. Many reasons are being attributed to this, the famous one being the pole shift in 2012. So is the world coming to an end because of this pole shift in 2012? In case if that is the  fate of our world  isn’t two years from now , very less time to fulfill our long list of ambitions? Let us ponder

What is the pole shift 2012? It can be defined as the shift in relative positions of present day locations of the poles on the geographic maps. What would such a change lead to? It can create natural calamities like volcano, floods, earth quake that can destroy the whole world in few hours just like what appears in 2012 movie of Roland Emrich. This would happen because of shift in poles with respect to its original position in a short frame of time. The next question that comes to our mind is, is such a shift only for earth or also for other planets in solar system?  The other bodies have already experienced reorientation of axis. However the fate of other bodies in solar system remains still unanswered.

We confine our discussion mainly with respect to earth. This calamity in 2012 has been predicted by many famous astrologists and Scholars. But do scientists have valid proofs to support their claim or does science oppose their claim? No research claims that spin axis moves relative to our planet. However there are claims which support that over a long frame of time (100 million years), there has been a shift of 10 degrees. This is known as true polar wander. But no super rapid shifts as imagined or thought by many.

It is to be understood very clearly that polar shift is different from continental drift, plate tectonics and geomagnetic reversal. Continental drift refers to the gradual break up and emerging of continents over a long period of millions of years where the oceans intrude and change the geographic map completely. This continental drift happens due to many reasons. The major reason is plate tectonics where the surface of earth made up of solid plates shift over asthenosphere. Earth South and north magnetic field get reversed periodically which is called geomagnetic reversal. The latter three theories have wide acceptance among scientists but not the polar shift.

We should understand the difference between pole shift and change in axial orientation. While there are scientific proofs to explain the axis of rotation changes gradually over a period of time, there are no proofs to support this polar shift which states there would be change in the geographic earth poles from the axis of rotation in near future.

So after this brief discussion of the polar shift in 2012 can be confidently conclude that we are all going to be alive in 2012?  Nature has to answer that.
